NEAF-British Museum Exclusive – Luxury and Power: Persia to Greece

Online Public Lecture by Dr James Fraser (British Museum), 9 August, 2023

The Council of the Near Eastern Archaeology Foundation invite you to an exclusive, personalised, live tour through the British Museum’s dazzling exhibition, Luxury and Power: Persia to Greece.

When: Wednesday 9 August, 2023 | 6:00pm AEST

Where: This event will be held online via Zoom only.

Drawing on dazzling objects from Afghanistan to Greece, this exhibition moves beyond the ancient Greek spin to explore a more complex story about luxury as a political tool in the Middle East and southeast Europe from 550–30 BCE.

Dr James Fraser, NEAF Councillor, will take us through the gallery before opening time, and show us his personal highlights of this dazzling exhibition.

Dr James Fraser is Curator for the Ancient Levant and Anatolia at the British Museum, and lead curator on the exhibition Luxury and Power: Persia to Greece. He has worked on archaeological projects in Jordan, Syria, Iraq, Afghanistan, Uzbekistan, Kashmir, Greece, Cambodia, Australia and the Solomon Islands. He received his PhD at the University of Sydney in 2016. In 2018, the PEF published his monograph Dolmens in the Levant as Annual XIV, and this book was awarded the G. Ernest Wright Award for Best Archaeological Publication published in the last two years. Jamie currently directs a British Museum dig investigating a 4,500 year-old olive oil factory at Khirbet Um al-Ghozlan in Jordan.

Please register by 4 August 2023.*

* While every effort is being made to ensure the tech is reliable, we’ve never done this before! So the lecture will be FREE to book. However, if we have no tech hitches and it all goes to plan, we will invite participants to make a $15 lecture payment to NEAF after the event.
