Dr John Tidmarsh Evening Lecture & Book Launch

Public Lecture
Pella of the Decapolis from the Ptolemies to Rome: But where was Alexander?
Dr John Tidmarsh (University of Sydney)

Wednesday 20th November 2024 | 6.30pm
The public lecture will be held online on Zoom and in person at the Vere Gordon Childe Centre (VGCC) (previously CCANESA) (Level 4 Madsen Building F09 University of Sydney).

Almost fifty years of excavations undertaken by the University of Sydney have enriched our knowledge of Pella during the Hellenistic and early Roman periods. The evidence is now clear that the site was inhabited during the era of Ptolemaic control in the third century BCE but are we being too optimistic in hoping that Pella may turn out to be one of the foundations of Alexander the Great himself?
Dr John Tidmarsh is an archaeologist who has conducted excavations in Syria, Jordan, Greece, and Cyprus.

He is currently Co-Director of the University of Sydney excavations at Pella in Jordan and also Co-Director of the Australian Mission to Jebel Khalid, Syria.
