Exclusive Members-Only in-person Event
Saturday 11th April 2026
Workshop: 12.30pm – 2.30pm, Followed by afternoon tea
Gina Barjeel is a luxury fashion designer and owner of Gina Barjeel fashions. Gina creates modern designs inspired by different cultures adding her signature touch of the Palestinian heritage embroidery. She also teaches tatreez embroidery and has kindly offered to guide a small group of NEAF members in the art of tatreez embroidery.
Tatreez al falestini is the embroidery used to embellish the thobe, the traditional dress of Palestinian women. The design of the thobe and the colours and patterns of the embroidery express the familial and regional identities of the women who wear them. During this workshop, Gina Barjeel will give a presentation about the history and meaning of tatreez, and then with her help the participants will stitch their own embroidery using the kits provided. The workshop includes afternoon tea and the opportunity to visit the Chau Chak Wing Museum to see the tatreez work “Common Threads” by the contemporary artist Khalil Rabah commissioned as part of the Biennale of Sydney.
This event is in honour of Judith McKenzie and Alison Salter.
